Have you ever woke up in the morning, looked in the mirror and wondered if you have traded faces with your 15 year old child? Red, bumpy, pus filled spots invading your once crystal clear face? Yes my friend you have ACNE! Did you know that anywhere from 30-50% of both men and women suffer from adult acne? This embarrassing problem is more common than you think.
What Is Acne?
Acne is formed when sebaceous glands produce sebum (oil) and that sebum gets trapped thus clogging the pores. This clogged pore then attracts bacteria which cause the pore to become inflamed and sometimes infected. Once the pore is infected a pus filled lesion will form.
What Are The Causes Of Adult Acne?
A number of things can lead to a sudden breakout of adult acne. Stress, bad cosmetics, medications, and hormones are some of the most common factors. As we are all aware stress can have many negative impacts on our body, acne being one of them. Stress hormones can cause the sebaceous glands to overproduce sebum causing clogged pores and breakouts. Bad cosmetics can also have a huge impact on the condition of your skin. The exchange of bacteria from your fingers, skin, & makeup brushes into your cosmetics can lead to a breeding ground for more bacteria. This is why it is so important to throw out old cosmetics every few months, depending on the type you are using. Medications such as Corticosteroids, and some birth control pills can cause adult acne as well. However, the leading cause of adult acne is hormones! Women especially are constantly experiencing hormonal changes throughout their adult lives. Pregnancy, perimenopause, and menopause can cause a major fluctuation of hormones. Though not as severe, men can also experience hormonal changes that can lead to acne breakouts. Hormonal acne can occur when a person’s body is over producing the male hormone androgen. Although an imbalance of both male and female hormones (estrogen) can be the cause as well.
Can It Be Treated?
YES! Adult acne can be treated with the correct plan for your particular skin type. A skin care professional has the knowledge to correctly identify the problem and prescribe a course of action. Often when self treating you can tend to do more damage than good. The over the counter “acne treatments” is typically designed with the teenager in mind and can be to drying for adult acneic skin, causing the skin to overcompensate by producing more oil. It becomes an expensive game of trial and error. By visiting your skin care professional a correct treatment plan can be designed for your specific needs. At Trevino Skin Care that is exactly what we will do!
